How to Check Your Credit Score

Your credit score is affected by five different categories, according to most credit reporting companies:

  • Payment history

  • Amounts owed (outstanding balances on loans, credit cards)

  • Length of credit history

  • Types of credit used (credit cards, mortgages)

  • New credit

Credit scores range from 280 to 850, 850 being the best. For more information on credit reports, contact:

AnnualCreditReport.com is a government site that allows you to obtain a free copy of your credit report annually. Always make sure you securely submit identifying information, such as a social security number.

It’s recommended to check your score at least once a year to make sure no one is using your credit without your knowledge or consent.

If your credit score is low, there are ways to build it back up. Pay your bills on time - don't miss a payment.

Use your credit card responsibly – don’t overspend or max out your limit

  • Become an authorized user – this is great for people who don’t live on their own, such as a student
